Rarity

Rarity is a system within the game generated to provide a regulated balance to various Bloodlines, Devotions, and other things your Character might have.

The goal of Rarity is to provide each player with some idea of how to configure their character, and to ensure choices made to improve your character are well thought out. For example, while it might sound fun to play a crazy Bloodline, who also has crazy Devotions and crazy Rituals all in one package, it can often overrun the game and become too powerful. Rarity provides a way to control combinations that are considered too strong, and represent the concept of rare Bloodlines and abilities within the world. If the book refers to it being rare for a Kindred to possess an ability, or belong to a certain Bloodline/Covenant combination, that is represented and covered within the Rarity system. In addition, Rarity provides a way to ensure that everyone’s unique abilities stay rare within the game world, so that your character is capable of doing things that other characters (who have already spent their Rarity on other things) can never do.

  • All players receive 5 Rarity
  • Base Rarity Costs are calculated as per the following guidelines:
    • Bloodlines have a base Rarity cost equal to the number of Clan-exclusive and/or Bloodline-exclusive Disciplines that it grants.
      • Particularly rare or powerful Bloodlines may have an additional +1 Rarity Cost. Bloodlines with particularly weak disciplines or burdensome weaknesses may have a decreased -1 Rarity Cost.
      • Bloodline members that are not part of the Bloodline’s favored group have an additional +1 Rarity Cost.
      • This means that Bloodlines cost between 1 and 4 Rarity.
    • Devotions have a Rarity base determined by the uniqueness of the Devotion and possible application under multiple circumstances.
      • A 0 Rarity Devotion is generally considered to worth just the experience alone, or is underpowered for the experience investment.
      • A 1 Rarity Devotion is generally considered good enough to need a reason for not everyone to get it, but is not powerful enough to require a higher cost.
      • A 2 Rarity Devotion is generally a potent ability that will strongly tie in with your character’s core concept. Most of the “good” Devotions cost 2 Rarity.
      • A 3 Rarity Devotion is considered the best-of-the-best in terms of Devotions. These Devotions will allow your character to completely trivialize a certain kind of threat or have a dramatic impact on related scenes.
      • If you are not part of the Devotion’s favored Clan or favored Covenant, you will pay an additional Rarity for it.
      • If you are part of the Devotion’s favored Bloodline, you will pay one less Rarity for it.
    • Merits follow a similar scale as Devotions.
    • Rituals generally cost no Rarity unless the effect is potent enough to require some sort of limitation. The most Rarity any Ritual will cost is 1.

All characters who are a member of a Bloodline may dedicate themselves to that Bloodline. What that means is that they spend all 5 Rarity but may now purchase all of the Bloodline’s associated Devotions without spending additional Rarity. This is done to allow a few specific Bloodlines to have access to their wide array of interesting Devotions while removing the ability of Bloodline members to mix and match all of those powers with those not associated with their Bloodline.

Below are the lists of Rarity, divided into subsections, along with house rules related to each one. If you have trouble finding something you are interested in, please notify the STs. We can either point you in the right direction, or it is possible you are looking at a book we have yet to codify into the Rarity system. Pointing these things out helps us develop the system further, and provide a ruling on how much Rarity a certain Devotion or Ritual might cost.
